One of our favorite movies here at Pyne & Smith is Amélie, a beautifully quirky cult French film from 2001. Famed for its cinematography and its message that each individual's life is wondrous and full of hope, it speaks to every loving introvert's soul. Not to mention the amount of style inspiration it offers!
Amélie is about an eccentric, imaginative, charmingly mischievous woman in Paris who works as a waitress. After finding a metal box filled with childhood memorabilia that belonged to a previous tenant in her apartment, she decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, from afar of course. Amélie masterfully deals with themes of loneliness and isolation alongside finding love, hope and enjoyment in the simplicities in life.
Amélie is known for its beautiful cinematography style. With its use of bold colors such as reds, yellows and greens, it portrays feelings of warmth, love and hope. Both the costume and set design create its own little quirky Parisian world that has inspired our style guide. This is how we would style Pyne & Smith for the world of Amélie.
Pyne & Smith X Amélie: Style Guide
Amélie is full of bright colours and patterns, we love her preference for scoop necklines and textured clothing in bold colors. Our No. 11 is perfect to recreate this look. Add a classic artisanal leather Mary Janes and contrasting colored socks for that eccentric Parisian feel.
No. 11 in Geranium Check
Many of Amélie's outfits feature a delicate cardigan over a scoop neck dress like our No. 15 Linen Day Dress. Sticking with bold contrasting colors and a classic leather Solovair loafer for this look.
No. 15 in Plum Truffle
Most of Amélie's outfits feature red or green to symbolise love and hope, while hints of patterns throughout the movie reflect a childlike innocence and imagination that brings that slightly quirky aesthetic. Combine the two with a No. 17 in a unique Green Melange that makes us feel as though we are in the movie ourselves. Add some ribbed socks and even a pair of Solovair Dealer Boots to add to the playful style.
